Staff Reporter NEARLY immediate assistance came from Qatar following President Hage Geingob’s first meeting with the Emir His Royal Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, with Qatar Airways resuming its flights to Namibia on Saturday 25 June, a tremendous boost for the country’s tourism sector. During a meeting on Monday in Doha, the two leaders agreed that the sector has immense potential for growth and the Qatari Government also indicated an interest in working closely with Namibia Wildlife Resorts to scale up cooperation in the hospitality sector. At the bilateral talks, the Emir lauded Namibia for its record of good governance and peace under the leadership of President Geingob who in return thanked the Emir for working towards a win-win partnership.
The two leaders also agreed that investments in energy, the hospitality sector and mining were showing positive results that could benefit the Namibia-Qatar partnership. The Emir said Qatar was ready to share its experience in domains that could be of interest to the Namibian Government. Geingob informed the Emir that fighting poverty was a key goal of the Namibian Government and for that reason, the Government was seeking more investments from friendly countries like Qatar to grow the economy and create jobs, specifically for young people. President Geingob and a high-profile delegation are in Doha attending the Qatar Economic Forum that concludes on 22 June. The President will address the Forum on inequality and the emergence of Namibia as a new green energy superpower in Africa. Emphasizing that Qatar-Namibia commercial relations were growing at a fast pace, the Emir thanked President Geingob for honouring the Forum with his presence. With the devastating effects of Covid-19 on the Namibian economy, President Geingob has prioritized economic growth and job creation by emphasizing economic diversification and new engines of growth. Attracting investment through deeper economic partnerships with countries such as Qatar is a key priority of the Geingob Presidency. The President will also hold meetings with key investors in the domains of agriculture, energy and other sectors. The Qatar Economic Forum brings together world leaders and entrepreneurs from around the world. The high-profile Bloomberg event, convening under the theme “Equalising the Global Recovery” in 2022, is hosted under the patronage of the Emir. Various heads of state, including more than 500 business leaders, and more than 75 keynote speakers will discuss economic trends, challenges, as well as post-pandemic recovery through various sessions.
